Iraq's Caucasus tribes demand formal recognition

 

Three Iraqi Caucasus tribes are uniting to seek recognition under the Iraqi Constitution. The Circassians, Chechens and Kumyks want to unify their communities under one national name, “Caucasus,” much like the Christians of Iraq did when they formed the Chaldean Syriac Assyrian Popular Council political party in 2007. The tribes seek formal recognition in the constitution to guarantee equal rights and legal protection from violence against minorities.

The transfer of land can enhance the protest mood among Kumyks.
The land question in Dagestan often coses inter-ethnic tensions. Therefore, any decision of the authorities of the region in land relations meets the public wary. The Dagestan authorities have decided to expand the boundaries of Makhachkala by the Karabudakhkent land area. It is no secret, that Makhachkala is congested. It causes such problems as inefficient public transport system, rain flooding and pollution of water supply. It is obvious that the city's infrastructure is worn out and not intended for so many people.


Meanwhile, on December 6 the head of Makhachkala, Musa Musayev  held weekly hardware meeting where he announced to colleagues  the decision of the head of the republic Ramzan Abdulatipov: to pass 300 hectares of Karabudakhkent district lands  into the ownership of a municipality with intracity division "Makhachkala". In this regard, the mayor instructed the chief architect to prepare the amendments to the general plan of the city and hand over the relevant documents to the Makhachkala City Assembly deputies to change the boundaries of the municipality.

Dagestan Resident Mission commemorates Bariyat Muradova

Ahead of International Theater Day, the resident mission of Dagestan held a commemorative meeting devoted to the great Kumyk actress Bariyat Muradova. In 2014 her 100th birthday was marked. She was the first and only woman mountaineer to be made a People’s Artist of the USSR. There was no village in Dagestan in which Bariyat didn’t perform. Many people still remember her lively and spontaneous manner of playing.

HRW claims deterioration of human rights situation in Northern Caucasus

In 2016, Russia stepped up the persecution against dissidents and tightened the control over freedom of expression and assembly. In Northern Caucasus, Salafi communities, human rights defenders and journalists found themselves under severe pressure of the authorities. This was declared by the report prepared by the international human rights organization "Human Rights Watch" (HRW).

First national cultural Kumyk autonomy formed in Chechnya




The first national and cultural Kumyk autonomy has been formed at Braguny, the largest Kumyk settlement in Chechnya. Activists of local Kumyk national and cultural autonomies Tere and Tyuzlyuk from the Gudermessky and the Groznenssky Districts, officials of the department for PR and religious organizations at the administration of the Chechen leader and government took part in the foundation of the autonomy, Lenta.ru reports.

Zaurbek Bikinin, the head of the Tere autonomy, has been elected as the head of the new organization.

Tere and Tyuzlyuk became the first Kumyk autonomies of Russia in 2014, according to Rinat Abdullayev, deputy head of the new organization.

Kumyks are a Turkic ethnicity living in Dagestan, Chechnya, Ingushetia and North Ossetia. They have a population of 600,000. Kumyks are the second largest national minority in Chechnya, after Russians.

Murzaev: I was beaten before presenting the report on corruption in Northern Caucasus

Absalitdin Murzaev, the head of the Board of Elders of the Kumyk Nation, who was beaten on March 3 in Dagestan, was to make a report, on March 18, at the administration of the Plenipotentiary Envoy of the Russian Federation to the North-Caucasian Federal District (NCFD), on corruption in land issues in Northern Caucasus. The attack could have to do with the presentation of the report, Mr Murzaev has supposed.
